On May 13, 2025, at Tsuneishi Shipbuilding’s Fukuyama Shipyard in Japan, the GREEN FUTURE – the world’s first Ultramax-class bulk carrier equipped with a methanol dual-fuel engine – was officially handed over to Japanese shipping company Kambara Kisen. The vessel will be operated by NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers, a core member of the NYK Group.

1. Key Specifications

  • Deadweight Tonnage (DWT): 65,700 tons

  • Overall Length: 199.99 meters

  • Beam: 32.25 meters

  • Cargo Hold Capacity: 81,500 m³

  • Design: TESS66 AEROLINE – next-generation design optimized for fuel efficiency and aerodynamics

GREEN FUTURE is the first Ultramax-class vessel built to run on methanol, marking a significant step forward in reducing harmful emissions from bulk shipping operations.

2. Outstanding Environmental Benefits

Equipped with a dual-fuel engine (methanol and heavy fuel oil - HFO), the GREEN FUTURE delivers:

  • 80% reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOₓ) emissions

  • 99% reduction in sulfur oxide (SOₓ) emissions

  • Approximately 10% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to conventional HFO-fueled ships

  • Green methanol compatible, enabling future carbon-neutral operations

The combination of a state-of-the-art methanol engine and Tsuneishi’s AEROLINE aerodynamic hull design further enhances fuel efficiency and reduces air resistance.
