Hateco Hai Phong: Inauguration of Vietnam’s First Smart International Container Terminal, Expanding Direct Export Routes to the U.S.
1. Hateco Hai Phong: A New Breakthrough for Vietnam’s Logistics Industry
On April 5, 2025, the Hateco Hai Phong International Container Terminal (HHIT) was officially inaugurated at the Lach Huyen port area, Hai Phong City. This event not only marks the debut of a state-of-the-art deep-water seaport but also serves as a significant milestone, elevating Vietnam’s role within the global logistics and supply chain network.
Notably, HHIT is Vietnam’s first international container terminal fully operating under a comprehensive smart port model, applying the latest automation technologies. Spanning 73 hectares, with a 900-meter berth and water depth ranging from -16.8m to -18.4m, the port can simultaneously handle two ultra-large mother vessels of up to 200,000 DWT (≥18,000 TEU), with a maximum vessel length of 400 meters — comparable to the largest container ships in the world.
Beyond that, HHIT establishes direct container shipping routes to the United States, connecting Hai Phong directly to both the East and West Coasts without transshipment. This is a strategic advantage, significantly reducing transit time, lowering logistics costs, and enhancing the competitiveness of Vietnamese exports in global markets.
2. High-Tech Port with Smart Operations
Equipped with 10 STS quay cranes, 36 electric e-RTG cranes, and 1,350 reefer plugs for refrigerated containers, HHIT optimizes its entire cargo handling and port operation processes through an integrated TOS (Terminal Operating System).
The implementation of the intelligent Truck Appointment System (TAS) further enhances operational efficiency by streamlining container truck scheduling, reducing congestion, and improving turnaround times for trucking companies.
HHIT also integrates real-time operational monitoring via its Operation Center (OC) and employs advanced technologies such as QR code recognition, OCR systems, and smart security alert mechanisms — all contributing to a safer, faster, and more efficient port environment.
