Inauguration of Lach Huyen International Container Terminals No. 3 & 4: A Strategic Boost for Northern Vietnam's Logistics Sector

On May 13th afternoon, 2025, the Hai Phong Port Joint Stock Company, in collaboration with Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC), held a ceremony to inaugurate Lach Huyen International Container Terminals No. 3 and 4. This is not only a key milestone in Vietnam’s national seaport infrastructure development strategy but also a major boost for the logistics sector across northern Vietnam.

1. Accelerating maritime connectivity and welcoming mother vessels

Approved by the Prime Minister in 2019, the project includes two berths with a total length of 750 meters and a draft depth of -16 meters, capable of accommodating mother vessels up to 165,000 DWT (14,000 TEUs) and up to 200,000 DWT with reduced draft. The terminal also includes a barge berth and a modern handling system utilizing automation and digital technologies. With a handling capacity of up to 1.5 million TEUs per year, Terminals No. 3 and 4 are expected to significantly enhance container throughput at Lach Huyen.

These terminals are developed under the model of a Green Port and Smart Port, incorporating energy-efficient and environmentally friendly practices, in alignment with global sustainability standards.

2. Emerging international transshipment hub in northern Vietnam

At the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Pham Hong Minh – Chairman of Hai Phong Port JSC – emphasized that this project plays a strategic role in boosting logistics growth and strengthening the international competitiveness of Vietnam’s exports.

According to Vietnam’s seaport development master plan, the Lach Huyen Port complex is expected to expand to 13 to 16 berths. The complex will be capable of receiving vessels up to 18,000 TEUs, bulk carriers of 100,000 tons, tankers of 150,000 tons, and cruise ships up to 225,000 GT.

In 2024, Hai Phong Port’s total cargo volume reached approximately 190 million metric tons, with projections to hit 212 million tons by 2025, reflecting a consistent annual growth rate of 12–15%. This reaffirms Hai Phong’s role as the leading seaport and logistics hub in the North, connecting directly to the trans-Pacific trade lanes and key East Asian markets.
