Panama Canal Transits Recovery After Drought

1. Overview of the Panama Canal Recovery
Between October 2024 and January 2025, vessel transits through the Panama Canal increased by 25.04% compared to the same period the previous year. The primary reason for this recovery was the effective water management measures implemented between July 2023 and mid-May 2024, which improved the canal’s operational conditions.
- Total vessel transits: 4,042, an increase of 809 transits compared to the same period last year.
- Panamax Locks transits: 2,928 vessels (accounting for 72.44%).
- Neopanamax Locks transits: 1,114 vessels (accounting for 27.56%).
- Average daily transits reached 36, significantly higher than the 22 transits per day recorded at the end of 2023.

3. Water Supply Improvement Projects & Future Plans
The Panama Canal Authority is currently working on a new water reservoir project on the Indio River to ensure a stable water supply for canal operations. A census of local communities in the area has already been completed.
Additionally, the canal is actively attracting shipping lines and industry sectors that previously diverted their routes due to last year’s transit restrictions.

4. Political Controversy Between the U.S. & China
The Panama Canal has recently become the center of a political controversy following statements by former U.S. President Donald Trump, claiming that China controls the canal and that the U.S. could reclaim control over it.
The debate revolves around Hutchison Ports, a Hong Kong-based company that operates two major ports at both ends of the canal:
- Balboa Port (Pacific Ocean)
- Cristobal Port (Atlantic Ocean)
This has raised concerns in the United States about China’s growing influence over this critical maritime trade route.
A scheduled call between President Trump and Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino to discuss the issue was postponed and has yet to be rescheduled.

5. Impact on Global Logistics & Trade
- Reduced supply chain pressure: The recovery of canal transits will help ease shipping delays between Asia, the Americas, and Europe.
- Freight rate adjustments: As transit volumes increase, shipping costs may decrease compared to the higher rates seen during previous restrictions.
- Competition with alternative shipping routes: Other maritime routes, such as the South American route via the Strait of Magellan and the Arctic route, may face increased competition as the Panama Canal stabilizes.

6. Conclusion
The recovery of vessel traffic through the Panama Canal marks a significant milestone after a challenging drought period. However, ongoing geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and China may continue to influence the canal’s strategic position in global trade.
