Tensions between the US and China have flared once again, as Washington threatens tariffs of up to 245% on Chinese imports. This aggressive move reflects a broader strategy under former President Donald Trump to push "America First" economic policies and curb dependence on Chinese critical materials.

1. Donald Trump threatens 245% tariff on Chinese goods

On April 15 (US time), the White House released a new executive order by President Donald Trump initiating a national security investigation into US dependence on critical imported materials. The order accompanies a detailed response to China’s retaliatory actions in recent months.

According to the statement, over 75 countries have engaged in trade talks with the US in recent months. However, China remains an exception - choosing instead to respond with higher tariffs and strategic export restrictions. In particular, Beijing recently suspended exports of key high-tech materials like gallium, germanium, antimony, and heavy rare earth magnets-used in aerospace, semiconductors, and military equipment.

In response, the US warned that Chinese imports could now be subject to tariffs as high as 245%. China had earlier raised its tariffs on US goods to 125%, following a 145% hike by the US, and has so far declined bilateral negotiations.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, “The ball is in China’s court. We’re open to negotiations, but China must act first.”
